Osteopaths use a range of hands on techniques such as massage, joint articulation, manipulation and stretching. Osteopaths believe that when correctly aligned the body is capable of self repair.
What is Osteopathy?
Osteopathy is a “whole person” approach to medicine—treating the entire person rather than just the symptoms. According to Dr. Still, “Osteopathy, is a philosophy, a science, and an art”.
The body has its own repair, self regulating and self healing processes – the body has an inherent capacity to heal itself given the right environment in which to achieve this. Osteopathy aims to correctly align and bring the body back to its neutral state. In doing this the body is capable of self repair and the body’s self healing mechanisms will do the rest. To find vitality is to find health!
What to expect at an Osteopathic Consultation
Before a physical examination take place, the osteopath will ask you about your health (past and present), as well as detailed questions about your presenting complaint. You may be asked to perform some movements like bending forward for example. The osteopath will place their hands on you to assess the state of the tissues. This may be in the area affected, or elsewhere, since osteopathy uses a whole body assessment.
Osteopaths use a variety of techniques to treat.
This can be soft tissue massage techniques
through to joint manipulations that help
restore joint function.
The number of treatments vary from person to person and it depends on the condition. If you have not gained any improvement in four or five sessions, then a referral will likely be recommended. Exercises and other advice will normally be given to you to speed up the recovery and maintain health.
